Richie Merritt has never acted before, and that could be the movie’s greatest strength or it’s most damning weakness. Maybe he works, maybe he feels authentic, maybe he blows us all away, and then again maybe he doesn’t. It’s hard to tell, but the trailer makes the film seem cool, seem gritty, and I’m into it, I just hope everyone involved knew what they were doing. The cast looks great: Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Marsan, Bel Powley. So I’m tentatively in, and I’m hopeful for something great.
