This will be Bettany’s writing, directing, and producing debut. That’s a lot of yourself to put into a film, especially for someone who’s never done it before. Problem is, how much can a Brit from a theatre family really put into a story about a homeless American mother who falls in love with an illegal African immigrant? I do trust Bettany as an actor, I just don’t know him as a director, and I fear that he’ll fall back on dramatic norms when push comes to shove. Now, Connelly is a real talent, and perhaps her performance will be enough to blow us away. So I’m hopeful, but not sold.
