I can’t recall seeing an actual, full-sized, critic-reviewed film with this low an audience rating. The 3’s are saved for the worst indie horror flicks that are 50 minutes long and feature a lot of ketchup and the 23-year-old director’s friend group. This is Zack Snyder, who once impressed us, and was tasked to do a Star Wars movie, which somehow turned into …this. Rebel Moon is as bad as its rating suggests, worse even, and it’s almost unfathomable that a real film could be this terrible.
A Motherworld empire has dominated the stars for generations, but their royal family was recently wiped out, leaving a void for power and leading some distant planets to rebel. On a peaceful farm world, the violence of the empire leads a lowly worker to reveal who she really is; a child of war, raised by the current Regent of the Motherworld, and hiding from what she was trained to do. Now she will form a team of antiheroes to protect her adopted village, and to perhaps spark the flame of revolt throughout the galaxy.
So, this was maybe going to be a Star Wars movie, but Snyder pitched the idea around a lot of places, and it stuck on Netflix as its own “original” concept. But there’s nothing original about it; this is Snyder’s amalgam of every, better sci-fi movie he’s ever seen. It’s a ridiculous combination of cheese, routine, and the worse dialogue you will ever hear, until your head pounds with the audacity of something so boring and so stupid. This is the genre at its absolute worst, and Snyder shows such a lack of talent here that we had best forget him, and quick, so that maybe he’ll finally go away. The bad acting, the inane characters, the nonsensical story; you would have to search hard to find anything as brutally crappy as Rebel Moon.
